Rockstar has confirmed one number for GTA 6 on consoles: 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no decision yet on a 60 fps mode. Everything else, the PS5 Pro at 4K, a 40 fps mode, the Series S resolution, comes from a leak or an analysis. Here is the state of it, console by console, as of 19 September 2026, so you know what you are buying a machine for.
What has Rockstar confirmed?
Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, told Flow Games in late August, just before the Extended Look, that GTA 6 targets 30 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that he would have to ask the technical team whether a 60 fps option was possible, at launch or later. That is the whole official position. Rockstar has not published resolutions, graphics modes, ray-tracing settings or the install size for any console, and it has not said a word specifically about the PS5 Pro or the Series S.
PS5 Pro: what does the leak say?
On 5 September, a set of Sony guidelines for the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label leaked through the channel Moore’s Law is Dead. According to them, a game earns the label by targeting 2160p, or a stable 60 fps, or a clear improvement in resolution, frame rate or ray tracing over the base console. TweakTown and Wccftech read it as Rockstar using the Pro’s GPU and PSSR upscaling to reach 4K at 30 fps rather than chasing 60. Digital Foundry’s reasoning, quoted in the same reports, is about the CPU: the Pro’s processor is within about 7 per cent of the base PS5’s, and a simulation as dense as GTA 6’s is CPU-bound, so the GPU gain buys resolution and ray tracing, not frame rate. A 40 fps mode on 120 Hz screens is the ceiling those analysts consider plausible. None of it is confirmed.
PS5 and Xbox Series X: the baseline
30 fps, by Rockstar’s word. Resolution unknown; the two consoles have run Rockstar’s previous games within a few per cent of each other, and nothing suggests a different split here. A 60 fps performance mode after launch is possible, Rockstar has said neither yes nor no, and GTA V waited for the PS5 generation to get one.
Xbox Series S: what is known?
Only that it is a launch platform at 30 fps. Rockstar has shown no Series S footage. Analysts expect the smaller GPU and the 10 GB of memory to cost resolution and effects rather than frame rate, as they did in every demanding cross-generation title, but no figure exists, and any “720p” you read is a guess. A GTABoom report of early September notes that a developer pushed back on fans using GTA 6 to demand 60 fps on the Series S; the console will run the game, at a cost Rockstar has not priced.
So which console should I buy for GTA 6?
| Console | Confirmed | Reported or expected |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | 30 fps target | 4K with PSSR, possible 40 fps mode, best image of the four |
| PlayStation 5 | 30 fps target | Same game at a lower resolution than the Pro |
| Xbox Series X | 30 fps target | On a par with the PS5; the console that allows the New Zealand early unlock |
| Xbox Series S | 30 fps target, launch platform | Lowest resolution and effects; cheapest way in |
If you already own any of the four, nothing here justifies changing. If you are buying, the Pro is the only console with a reported advantage, and that advantage is resolution, not smoothness; the Series S is the cheapest ticket and will run the same story. Frequently asked questions
Will GTA 6 run at 60 fps on PS5 Pro?
Not confirmed. Rockstar targets 30 fps on every console and has not decided on a 60 fps mode; analysts consider 40 fps the realistic ceiling on the Pro.
Is GTA 6 4K on PS5 Pro?
Reported, not confirmed. The leaked PS5 Pro Enhanced rules point to a 4K target with PSSR, at 30 fps.
Does GTA 6 run on Xbox Series S?
Yes, it is a launch platform at 30 fps. Resolution and effects are not published.
Will GTA 6 get a 60 fps patch later?
Rockstar has said it has not decided. GTA V’s 60 fps mode arrived with the PS5 and Series X|S versions, years after launch.
