L.A. Noire recreates Los Angeles in 1947 as an open world of about 8 square miles, larger than GTA IV's Liberty City. The map is dotted with 30 real landmarks of the period, from Grauman's Chinese Theatre and Union Station to Angels Flight and the giant Intolerance film set, and finding all of them unlocks the Star Map achievement.

About 8 square miles, according to the L.A. Noire Wiki and Kotaku, which both compare it with GTA IV's 6 square miles. The city is built from 1940s Los Angeles, and most of the game's landmarks are real monuments of the time.

The game does not split the map into named districts the way GTA does. According to the L.A. Noire Wiki, it covers Hollywood, Wilshire, Westlake, Downtown (with Bunker Hill, Chinatown and the Theater District), Boyle Heights and San Pedro.

Besides the 30 landmarks, the city hides golden film reels, which unlock the Hollywoodland achievement, and newspapers to collect.
