GTA 5 Easter Eggs: UFOs, Bigfoot and the Ghost

📅 Checked on

Everything players spent a decade inventing about San Andreas is genuinely in GTA V. Bigfoot is playable. There is an alien frozen under the ice in North Yankton, four UFOs in the sky and the sea, and a ghost who appears on Mount Gordo between 23:00 and midnight with her husband’s name written in blood beneath her. 14 secrets, each with the place and the time.

Bigfoot, Finally Real

🥚

Becoming Bigfoot

Eat all 27 peyote plants, then the seven golden ones, in order
Once the 27 are gone, a golden plant appears each day of the week. Eat them from Sunday to Saturday and the last one turns you into Bigfoot beside the body of the Sasquatch Hunter from the mission The Last One. Growl and something howls back.
🥚

The hunt, and the Beast

Follow the howl to Thomson Scrapyard
A trail of dead bodies leads to a shack. Find the last one and a werewolf called the Beast leaps from the building. Beat it and both Bigfoot and the Beast unlock in Director Mode. The Beast is Michael J. Fox's character from Teen Wolf.
🥚

The thermal sighting

During the mission Predator, through the thermal scope
Zoom in on the heat signature at the bottom right of the screen and the Sasquatch is standing there. Shooting it does nothing, and it vanishes within seconds.

Four UFOs, Three of Them Locked

🥚

The Fort Zancudo UFO

Above Fort Zancudo, from 3am to 4am, after 100% completion
The words « segregate and rearrange » are painted on the side. Rearrange the letters of « segregate » and you get « Easter egg ». A green light marks its position on a building below.
🥚

The Sandy Shores UFO

Above the Beam Me Up area, after 100% completion
This one has FIB written on the hull, the game's version of the FBI, which is a joke about who is really watching.
🥚

The Mount Chiliad UFO

Above the peak, at 3am, in stormy weather only
The hardest of the four to see: the time and the weather both have to be right, and you need 100% completion first.
🥚

The underwater UFO

North of Paleto Bay and Procopio Beach, on the seabed
Overgrown with plants, and the only one you can find without completing the game. If you want to see a UFO today, this is the one.
🥚

The fake one on a roof

Embedded in the roof of Bishop's WTF?!, Vinewood Boulevard
A prop rather than a sighting, though it makes the same sound as the real ones.

A Ghost With a Name and a Time

🥚

Jolene Cranley-Evans

Eastern peak of Mount Gordo, between 23:00 and midnight
A woman floats above the rock with the word JOCK written in blood beneath her. Get too close and she disappears. A distressed voice is audible while she is there.
🥚

The newspaper that explains her

The Senora Beacon, readable in game
An article implies the ghost is the wife of Jock Cranley, the stuntman whose face is on billboards across the state, and that he killed her over an argument. The game never says it outright anywhere else.

Things in the Files

🥚

The alien in the ice

Ludendorff, North Yankton, under the train bridge from the Prologue
Drive down the embankment onto the frozen creek and an alien is visible below the ice. It is also reachable during the mission Bury the Hatchet.
🥚

The alien egg

In the game files, and later in GTA Online
It glows in the dark. Rockstar eventually made it obtainable in the Gunrunning update, as a supply run that only triggers after 600 resupply missions and only between 21:00 and 23:00.
🥚

The Collector's Edition map

The printed blueprint, under ultraviolet light
A black light reveals markings, legends and text that are not printed in visible ink. Most of them point at the UFOs, and three of the spaceship part locations are shown.

The Game Notices You

🥚

The other protagonists text you

Anywhere, while playing as someone else
Shoot at Michael's house as Trevor and Michael calls to complain. Sneak around it and he texts asking if that is you outside. Steal his car and he asks whether you have seen it.

Rockstar Spent Ten Years Denying This

In 2005 a Rockstar co-founder told an interviewer there was no Bigfoot in San Andreas, and there was not: no model, no script, no sound. The studio’s answer to the search was a sign on the Gant Bridge reading « There are no easter eggs up here. Go away. », and before that a note in a GTA III alley saying you were not supposed to be able to get there.

Then they built all of it. GTA V has the Bigfoot, and lets you be him. It has the aliens the black light map hinted at. It has a ghost with a name, a time of night and a newspaper article explaining who killed her. The myths that were never in San Andreas became the content of the game that followed it, which is the funniest possible response to twenty years of people insisting they had seen something.

The UFO That Tells You It Is an Easter Egg

The craft above Fort Zancudo has « segregate and rearrange » painted along its side. It is an instruction: rearrange the letters of « segregate » and they spell « Easter egg ». Rockstar hid a UFO behind 100% completion and then wrote a confession on it.

Three of the four UFOs need that 100% first, plus the right hour and in one case the right weather. The fourth sits on the seabed north of Paleto Bay, overgrown, needing nothing at all. If you want to see one this evening, that is the one to swim to.

More GTA V on GTAside

Going looking is easier armed: the 36 cheat codes include a parachute and explosive ammunition, the weapons rankings cover every class, and the money guide pays for it. The best businesses and the game page cover the rest. For the earlier games: GTA III, San Andreas and GTA IV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Bigfoot in GTA 5?
Yes, and you can be him. Eat all 27 peyote plants, then the seven golden plants that appear afterwards, one per day of the week, in order from Sunday to Saturday. The last one turns you into Bigfoot and starts a hunt that ends in a fight with a werewolf called the Beast. Winning unlocks both in Director Mode. This is Rockstar answering a myth that followed San Andreas for a decade, and which they denied at the time.
Where are the UFOs in GTA 5?
There are four. One above Fort Zancudo between 3am and 4am, one above the Beam Me Up in Sandy Shores, one above Mount Chiliad at 3am in stormy weather, and one underwater north of Paleto Bay. The first three require 100% completion. The underwater one does not, which makes it the only UFO most players will ever see.
What does segregate and rearrange mean on the GTA 5 UFO?
It is an instruction. Rearrange the letters of the word « segregate » and they spell « Easter egg ». The phrase is painted on the side of the UFO above Fort Zancudo.
Where is the ghost in GTA 5?
On the eastern peak of Mount Gordo, between 23:00 and midnight. She is Jolene Cranley-Evans, and the word JOCK is written in blood below her. An article in The Senora Beacon implies her husband Jock Cranley killed her. Approach too closely and she vanishes.
Where is the frozen alien in GTA 5?
Under the ice of the creek in Ludendorff, North Yankton, beneath the train bridge the crew crosses in the Prologue. Drive down the embankment onto the ice and look down. It can also be seen during the mission Bury the Hatchet.
