The Outbreak
Shortly after John is back with his family at Beecher's Hope, a zombified Uncle bites Abigail, who bites Jack. John ties them up and rides to Blackwater, where Professor Harold MacDougal suspects a virus before an undead Nastas kills him. The survivors blame Nigel West Dickens and Seth Briars; both deny it, and Seth points John towards the Aztecs and Mexico.
Mexico and the Aztec Mask
Mexico is even worse off. At Las Hermanas, Mother Superior Calderón tells John that a woman blamed the outbreak on Abraham Reyes. In Escalera, John kills the undead Reyes, who stole an Aztec mask and brought the plague. John and the woman return the mask, ending the plague, and she reveals herself as the Aztec goddess Ayauhteotl and gives him one of the Four Horses of the Apocalypse.
How Does Undead Nightmare End?
John comes home to find Abigail and Jack cured. In the epilogue, On a Pale Horse, set after John's death, Seth steals the mask and the dead rise again. John rises too, but with his soul intact, because he was buried with a flask of holy water.
Is Undead Nightmare Canon?
No. It is a non-canonical, alternate story that does not affect Red Dead Redemption's plot. The real ending of John's story is on our Red Dead Redemption story missions page.
