Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake: Release Date, Status and Everything Remedy Has Said (2026)

The Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake is still in development, but it has no release date, no trailer and no final title. Remedy’s half-year report of 11 August 2026 lists it in “full production” with Rockstar Games as publisher, a stage it reached in mid-2024, and Remedy now says it cannot comment further because Rockstar handles the publishing side. Here is every official fact since the 2022 announcement, and what is only speculation.

Is the Max Payne remake still happening?

Yes. Every Remedy report since August 2024 lists the project in “full production”, most recently the half-year report of 11 August 2026. On the webcast that day, new CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon said the remake “remains in full production with Rockstar Games”, as GamesRadar+ reported. The game also pays part of Remedy’s bills: development fees from the Max Payne remake and CONTROL Resonant together brought in 14.5 million euros in the first half of 2026. Remedy does not say how much of that comes from Max Payne alone.

Why is there so little news?

Because Rockstar controls it. When investors asked about the game on 11 August 2026, Remedy’s investor relations manager Aapo Kilpinen answered: “On that game, Rockstar Games is handling the publishing side. So we cannot comment on those questions.” Rockstar itself has not said a word about the remake since the April 2022 announcement, when Sam Houser said Rockstar could not wait to play the new versions. Remedy’s page for the game still has an empty release year and no screenshots, and the remake is not in the list of upcoming games Take-Two published on 7 August 2026. Any reveal will come from Rockstar.

From concept to full production

DateStage
April 2022Announced with Rockstar, in concept development
Early 2023Proof of concept
Autumn 2023Production readiness: “clarity on the style and scope of the game”
March 2024Remedy confirms Rockstar funds it fully, with a budget similar to Alan Wake 2
Q2 2024Full production
August 2026Still in full production

Remedy’s own model gives a full production phase of one to two years before beta. Some sites turned that into a 2026 release date, but it is a general rule for Remedy’s games, not a statement about Max Payne, and Remedy has never given a year. Our reading: after more than two years in full production, the game is well advanced, but with GTA 6 launching on 19 November 2026, a Rockstar reveal before then looks unlikely.

Who will voice Max Payne?

Nobody has been announced. James McCaffrey, who voiced Max in all three games, died on 17 December 2023 at 65; Rockstar called him “the inimitable and commanding presence who brought Max Payne to life”. Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director, wrote the original games and lent his face to Max in 2001. Asked by VGC in September 2023 whether he would play Max again, he said: “No comment! That’s going too far.” He also called the remake “a big, big project”, since it brings two old games up to modern standards and combines them into one.

What happened at Remedy in the meantime

Remedy changed CEO: Tero Virtala, who signed the Max Payne deal, stepped down in October 2025, and Jean-Charles Gaudechon, a former EA executive, took over on 1 March 2026. The studio also released CONTROL Resonant, its self-published sequel, on 24 September 2026. Its next report, the business review for January to September, is due on 3 November 2026. We will update this page then.

How to play Max Payne while you wait

The originals are cheap on PC: the Max Payne bundle is 8.39 EUR at Instant Gaming on 27 September 2026, and the whole series has been playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility since November 2021.
