GTA 2 has seven gangs. The Zaibatsu Corporation operates in all three districts of Anywhere City; the other six are local: the Loonies and the Yakuza Downtown, the SRS Scientists and the Rednecks in Residential, and the Russian Mafia and the Hare Krishna in Industrial. Working for a gang earns its respect and loses the respect of its rivals.

The Zaibatsu has a different leader in each district: Trey Welsh Downtown, Red Valdez in Residential and Uno Carb in Industrial.
Doing jobs for a gang raises your respect with it and lowers it with its rivals. With enough respect, a gang gives you harder jobs; with too little, its members attack you on sight. Jobs come from phones colour-coded by difficulty: green for easy jobs, yellow for medium ones that need some respect, and red for hard ones that need the most.
As a gang becomes hostile, its members use heavier weapons:
