Midnight Club: Street Racing is the first game in the Midnight Club series, developed by Angel Studios and published by Rockstar Games as a PlayStation 2 launch title in October 2000. You race illegally through open recreations of New York City and London, working up the street racing ladder one opponent at a time.
You drive across a whole city rather than around a track. Career mode has you beating named opponents one by one, and the ladder ends in pink slip races where the winner takes the loser's car. Because the streets are open, the route between checkpoints is yours to choose, which is the idea the whole series is built on.
A mix of city traffic and tuner cars. Taxis, buses and other civilian vehicles can be won and driven, alongside fictional versions of well known Toyota, Nissan and Honda imports. Rockstar did not hold the manufacturer licences at this point, so the tuners resemble their real counterparts without carrying their names.
It is a different game. Rebellion Developments built it and Destination Software published it in 2001, on hardware that cannot render the open cities of the PlayStation 2 original. Reviews were mixed for the handheld version while the PS2 game was well received.
First. Midnight Club II followed in 2003 with motorcycles and three new cities, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition added car customisation in 2005, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles closed the series in 2008.
New York City and London, both as open maps you can drive across freely rather than as fixed tracks.
