Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Released 2008 · PlayStation 3 · Xbox 360 · PSP

Midnight Club: Los Angeles is Rockstar's 2008 street racing game, and the last entry in the Midnight Club series. You arrive in a recreated Los Angeles with a car and no reputation, and build both by winning illegal races.

Its defining feature is that there are no menus between events: you drive to a rival, flash your lights, and the race starts where you stand.

What Makes It Different From Other Racers?

There is no lobby and no race select screen. The city is always loaded, rivals are physically present in it, and a race begins and ends on real streets. Losing simply drops you back into traffic. That seamlessness was rare in 2008 and is still the reason people go back to it.

Customisation Down to the Detail

Body kits, paint, vinyls, rims, suspension height, neon, engine and drivetrain parts are all adjustable, and the changes show on the car in the world rather than only in a garage. The roster runs from tuners and muscle to exotics and motorbikes, with the South Central expansion adding lowriders and hydraulics.

A Los Angeles Built for Speed

The map covers downtown, Beverly Hills, Hollywood and Santa Monica, compressed but recognisable, with freeway stretches for top speed and tight canyon roads for handling. Traffic and time of day are part of the challenge rather than decoration.

Can You Still Buy It?

It was delisted from digital storefronts years ago, so a physical PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 copy is the usual route. The Xbox 360 version is playable through backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.
