Bully is Rockstar's 2006 open world game set inside a boarding school rather than a city. You play Jimmy Hopkins, a 15-year-old dumped at Bullworth Academy for a year, and the goal is to climb the school's social ladder rather than a criminal one. It swaps guns for slingshots, stink bombs and fistfights.
You attend class, and each subject is a minigame that unlocks something real: English improves your ability to talk your way out of trouble, Chemistry unlocks firecrackers, Gym improves grappling. Outside class you take on errands for five cliques, the bullies, jocks, nerds, preppies and greasers, each with their own turf and grudges. A curfew and a class timetable give the day a shape no other Rockstar game has.
The campus, the surrounding town, the carnival and the docks form a compact world you cross on foot, by bike or on a skateboard. It is far smaller than Liberty City, and that is the point: everything is hand-placed and you learn the geography properly. Prefects patrol instead of police, and getting caught means detention rather than a shootout.
It is the only Rockstar game about being a teenager, and the writing takes that seriously enough to be funny rather than smug. Fans have asked for a sequel for nearly twenty years, and a follow-up has been rumoured and reportedly shelved more than once. Nothing official has ever been announced.
Bully: Scholarship Edition is the one to get. It came to Xbox 360, Wii and PC in 2008 with extra classes, extra missions and new content over the 2006 PlayStation 2 original. An Anniversary Edition followed on iOS and Android in 2016.
No. It shares Rockstar's open world design and its sense of humour, but it has its own setting, characters and story, with no link to the Grand Theft Auto universe.
