GTA 5 Mods: How to Install Them Safely on PC
GTA 5 mods only work on PC, in story mode. Most start with Script Hook V: copy ScriptHookV.dll and the ASI loader dinput8.dll next to GTA5.exe, then add the .asi mods you want. Script Hook V closes the game if you go into GTA Online, and Rockstar has said it does not ban players for single-player mods. Online, cheat menus and other mods that interfere with multiplayer are forbidden by Rockstar's Mod Guidelines.
Are GTA 5 Mods Allowed?
In single player, yes, within limits. Take-Two has said it generally does not take action against single-player, non-commercial PC mods that respect other people's intellectual property. Rockstar's Mod Guidelines, dated 10 September 2026, set the limits: no mods that extend Rockstar's official storylines or missions, no mods that move maps or characters from one Rockstar game into another, no monetization outside Rockstar's Creator Platform, and multiplayer modding only through that licensed platform.
Can You Get Banned for Mods in GTA 5?
Not for single-player mods: Rockstar has stated that players are not banned for using them. The risk is online. Rockstar's guidelines forbid creating, sharing or using cheat menus or other software that interferes with its multiplayer services. Script Hook V guards against mistakes: according to its author, it closes GTA V when the player goes into multiplayer. Remove your mods before playing GTA Online.
Can You Get Mods on PS5 or Xbox?
No. Mods are a PC feature: the tools on this page run on the Windows version of GTA V, and the console versions do not accept them. On console, the built-in GTA 5 cheat codes are the way to change the game.
How to Install GTA 5 Mods
These steps come from the Script Hook V page of its author, Alexander Blade, repeated on GTA5-Mods.com.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
1 | Download Script Hook V from the author's site, dev-c.com, or its GTA5-Mods.com page. |
2 | Copy ScriptHookV.dll into the game's main folder, where GTA5.exe is. |
3 | Copy the ASI loader, dinput8.dll, into the same folder. Delete dsound.dll if an older loader left one there. |
4 | Copy the .asi mods you want into that folder. NativeTrainer.asi, included in the download, is a basic trainer. |
5 | After every GTA V update, install the matching Script Hook V version before launching the game. |
Mods written in .NET also need Community Script Hook V .NET, and mods that replace game files, such as vehicles or textures, are usually installed with OpenIV. Always read each mod's own instructions: they can differ.
Do Mods Work on GTA V Enhanced?
Many do, but not all. Script Hook V's release of 15 July 2026 supports game builds 1.0.3889.0 and 1.0.1158.13, covering Legacy and Enhanced, and GTA5-Mods.com tags the mods that run on Enhanced. Older Legacy mods may not work. What separates the two versions is explained in our GTA V Enhanced guide.
