All the cheat codes for the original 1997 Grand Theft Auto on PC, then on PlayStation below. They are not typed during play: you enter them as your character's name on the name entry screen.
Clear the name field with Delete, type the code, press Enter. A revving engine sound confirms the code was accepted. This is the oldest cheat system in the series, and it is the reason later games kept the habit of hiding codes behind odd phrases. The expansion that followed uses the same method: see the GTA London 1969 codes.

GTA 1 Cheat Codes for PlayStation
The PlayStation version has its own list, and none of the PC codes above work on it. The method is the same: type the code as your player name on the name entry screen and accept it. To stack several, enter one, choose Rename, and enter the next.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you enter cheat codes in GTA 1?
As your character's name, not during gameplay. On the name entry screen, clear the field with Delete, type the code and press Enter. A revving engine sound confirms it was accepted. There is no console and no in-game input.
Do GTA 1 cheats still work today?
Yes, on the original PC release, which is the version most people run through fan preservation projects. There is no modern re-release of the 1997 game, so there is no newer version where the codes could have changed.
Which cities does the level cheat unlock?
All three: Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City. The 1997 game used those names first, long before each became its own game in the 3D era.
Are the GTA 1 PlayStation codes the same as on PC?
No. The PlayStation version has its own list: WEYHEY gives 9,999,990 points, SATANLIVES 99 lives and CHUFF turns the police off. They go in the same place, as your player name, and you can stack several by choosing Rename between codes.
