GTA 4 Pigeons: All 200 Flying Rat Locations and the Reward

📅 Checked on

GTA 4 has 200 pigeons, the "flying rats", hidden across Liberty City. Shooting all 200 puts an Annihilator attack helicopter on the helipad of the MeTV building in Star Junction, Algonquin, unlocks the Endangered Species achievement and counts for 2.5% of 100% completion. There is no reward before the 200th. All 200 locations are below, island by island, with how to reach each bird.

Where Are the Pigeons? Count by Island

26open from the start
22open from the start
4reached from Dukes or Bohan
6after Blow Your Cover
57after Blow Your Cover
6after Blow Your Cover
56after Three Leaf Clover

Broker, Dukes and Bohan are open from the first mission, so start there. Algonquin, Colony Island and Happiness Island open after the mission Blow Your Cover, and Alderney after Three Leaf Clover; going to a locked island early gives you a wanted level for as long as you stay.

How to Hunt the Flying Rats

Pigeons glow red-orange and coo constantly, which makes them easier to spot at night. Gunfire, explosions, fire or running them over all work; fists and bats do not. A sniper rifle saves the most trouble, because shooting near police brings a wanted level. Some birds only appear when you get fairly close, and on PC low detail settings can hide them at a distance. Save manually after a batch of kills.

Several spots hold two birds side by side, in the Steinway car park, on a brick wall and a cleaners' roof in South Bohan and on a barbed-wire wall in Acter Industrial Park, and six sit on the Statue of Happiness. If you are stuck on 199, check those first. Two birds cause trouble on purpose: the one on the control tower at Francis International, where setting foot on the airfield gives a four-star wanted level, so land a helicopter on the tower instead; and the one in the Civilization Committee yard in Hatton Gardens, which you should snipe from the street.

The Reward: Annihilator and Endangered Species

After the 200th pigeon, an Annihilator, a military helicopter armed with four miniguns, replaces the Maverick on the helipad on top of the MeTV building in Star Junction. Fly in, or take the window-cleaner lift in the back alley up to the roof and climb the ladders. The Endangered Species achievement unlocks at the same time, and the 2.5% counts toward 100% completion, which gives the Key to the City achievement and unlimited ammo in the shops.

Are There Pigeons in The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony?

No. Each episode has 50 seagulls instead. In The Lost and Damned, shooting all 50 gives the Innovation motorcycle; in The Ballad of Gay Tony, an APC at Yusuf Amir's construction site. The rest of Niko's world is on our GTA 4 map, the story on the GTA 4 missions list, and the phone cheats that give you a sniper rifle on the GTA 4 cheat codes page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when you kill all the pigeons in GTA 4?
Once the 200th flying rat dies, an Annihilator attack helicopter starts appearing on the helipad on top of the MeTV building in Star Junction, Algonquin. You also unlock the Endangered Species achievement or trophy and gain 2.5% toward 100% completion. There is no reward at any earlier milestone.
How many pigeons are there in GTA 4?
200. By island: Broker 23, Dukes 26, Bohan 22, Charge Island 4, Colony Island 6, Algonquin 57, Happiness Island 6 and Alderney 56. Guides split the bridge birds slightly differently, but every reliable list adds up to 200.
Where is the airport control tower pigeon in GTA 4?
It sits on the top railing of the control tower at Francis International Airport in Dukes. The easiest way is to land a helicopter on the tower's top tier. The alternative is to cross the fence behind the terminal, get close enough for the bird to appear and snipe it, but setting foot on the airfield gives you a four-star wanted level, so have a getaway car ready.
How many pigeons are on the Statue of Happiness?
Six: one on the north side of the top platform at the base, one on the crown, one on the rim of the coffee cup, one on the right thumb holding the cup, one on the left shoulder and one on the left hand holding the tablet. All six can be sniped from the base of the statue, so one trip by boat or helicopter clears them.
Why is a GTA 4 pigeon not spawning?
Usually it has not spawned because you are too far away: some birds only render up close, and on PC low detail settings make this worse. Get closer or raise the view distance. If you are stuck on 199, check the double spots (two birds side by side in Steinway, South Bohan and Acter Industrial Park, six on the Statue of Happiness), make sure you saved after each session since kills are not autosaved, and note that two birds killed in the same explosion may count as one.
Are the pigeons needed for 100% completion?
Yes. All 200 are required and they count for 2.5% of the total. 100% unlocks the Key to the City achievement and lets you buy unlimited ammo.
Do pigeons respawn in GTA 4?
No. A pigeon you kill stays dead on that save, so save manually after a batch of kills to be safe.
Are there pigeons in The Lost and Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony?
No. Each episode swaps them for 50 seagulls. In The Lost and Damned the reward is the Innovation motorcycle; in The Ballad of Gay Tony it is an APC at Yusuf Amir's construction site.
When can I start hunting pigeons?
From the first mission. From the start you can reach Broker, Dukes and Bohan. Algonquin, Colony Island and Happiness Island unlock with Blow Your Cover, and Alderney with Three Leaf Clover. Going to a locked island early gets you a wanted level for as long as you stay.
How do I check how many pigeons I have killed?
Pause the game and open the Stats menu: the number of pigeons you have killed is listed there.
