GTA San Andreas Easter Eggs, and the Myths That Are Not

📅 Checked on

San Andreas is full of easter eggs you can go and stand in front of, and empty of the creatures it is famous for. There is no Bigfoot, no Leatherface and no ghost driver. There is a crowbar from Half-Life in the Area 69 laboratory, the Rockstar logo written in the stars, and a sign at the top of the Gant Bridge that reads « There are no easter eggs up here. Go away. »

Almost every page on this subject mixes the two together, which is why the myths never die. Below: 27 easter eggs with their exact locations, then the famous myths with what is actually happening in each case.

The Myths, and What They Really Are

These are the stories that made San Andreas the most rumour-heavy game Rockstar ever shipped. Two of them are simply false. Two are real and have an ordinary explanation. One is true in a way nobody expects.

The storyStatusWhat is actually going on
Bigfoot in the woods around Mount Chiliad
Not in the gameTerry Donovan, co-founder of Rockstar, said so directly in a 2005 interview, and no model matching the description exists anywhere in the game data. The videos that spread the story used mods. Rockstar eventually gave in and put a Bigfoot in GTA V, which is the closest thing to an admission that the myth outlived the game.
Leatherface in Back o' Beyond
Not in the gameThe same pattern: no model, no script, no sound file. The story grew out of low resolution screenshots of ordinary rural pedestrians, taken at night on a PlayStation 2.
Ghost cars that drive themselves
Real, but not a ghostCars do roll downhill on their own in Back o' Beyond and on the roads around Mount Chiliad. It is the terrain: vehicles parked on a slope are not held in place, so they drift. A physics quirk, filmed at night, became a haunting.
The ghost graffiti in Las Venturas
RealA tag reading « Ghost » does exist on a wall near the Las Venturas airport. It is graffiti, placed by an artist, and it means nothing beyond what it says.
Piggsy hiding in San Andreas
Half truePiggsy is genuinely in the game, as a small plastic figure on a shelf inside Zero RC. He is not roaming the countryside.

Why the Bigfoot Story Lasted Twenty Years

Because it was unfalsifiable in the only way that matters. San Andreas was enormous by the standards of 2004, the countryside was empty and foggy, and proving a creature is not in a map that size requires searching all of it. Terry Donovan, one of Rockstar's co-founders, denied it outright in a 2005 interview, and the data has never contained a matching model. It made no difference: modders staged sightings, the footage spread on forums that had no easy way to check anything, and the story became bigger than the game.

Rockstar's own answer is the best part of it. They put a sign at the top of the Gant Bridge, exactly where players were climbing to look, telling them to go away. Then, years later, they put a real Bigfoot in GTA V. The myth outlived the game that supposedly contained it.

More San Andreas on GTAside

If you are going looking for these: the secret areas and early unlocks, the 92 cheat codes, several of which will fly you straight to Area 69, the fastest cars to get there in and the best weapons for when the alarm goes off. The game page covers the rest. For the other games, the easter eggs of GTA III, GTA IV and GTA V.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas?
No. Terry Donovan, one of Rockstar's co-founders, stated in a 2005 interview that Bigfoot was not in the game, and no matching model exists in the game data. The videos that spread the story were made with mods. Rockstar did later put a Bigfoot into GTA V, which is where the creature actually exists.
What is the sign on the Gant Bridge in San Andreas?
A sign at the top of the bridge reading « There are no easter eggs up here. Go away. » Rockstar placed it precisely where players were climbing to look for secrets, and it is itself one of the game's better easter eggs.
Why do cars move on their own in Back o' Beyond?
Because of the slope. San Andreas does not hold parked vehicles in place on an incline, so a car left on a hillside rolls. Filmed at night in a fog-covered forest, that became the ghost car myth.
How many easter eggs are there in GTA San Andreas?
Dozens that are documented and verifiable, from the Rockstar logo hidden in the night sky to a crowbar from Half-Life sitting in the Area 69 laboratory. This page lists twenty-five of them with their locations, and separates them from the myths, which are a different thing entirely.
What is the difference between an easter egg and a GTA myth?
An easter egg is in the game and anyone can go and look at it. A myth is a story about something that is not, kept alive because it cannot be disproved by someone who has not searched every square metre.
