Claude is a small-time criminal betrayed and shot by his girlfriend Catalina during a bank heist in Liberty City. He never says a word in the game. Catalina resurfaces later as the leader of the Colombian Cartel, and the story ends with Claude taking his revenge. More on the Claude profile.

8-Ball, an explosives expert, escapes from the prison transport with Claude and introduces him to the Leone Mafia family. Claude works for Luigi Goterelli, Joey Leone and Toni Cipriani, and wins the respect of the Don, Salvatore Leone, by helping the family in a war against the Triads. With 8-Ball's help he destroys the Cartel's floating drug lab.
When Salvatore hands Claude a car to get rid of, Maria warns him just in time: to make her husband jealous she had claimed an affair with Claude, and Salvatore has packed the car with explosives. Maria and her friend Asuka Kasen get Claude across to Staunton Island, and he later settles the score with the Mafia by killing Salvatore.

On Staunton Island, Claude works for the Yakuza of Asuka and Kenji Kasen, for corrupt police inspector Ray Machowski, whom he helps flee the city, and for businessman Donald Love. Love has Claude kill Kenji disguised as a Cartel attack, to start a gang war that lowers property prices. Catalina later kills Asuka and Miguel, and kidnaps Maria.

8-Ball is an explosives expert and the owner of 8-Ball Autos in Grand Theft Auto III (2001). A prisoner alongside Claude at the start of the game, he escapes with him and introduces him to the Leone family. His real name is never given. The rapper Guru voices him.

Keith "Guru" Elam, the rapper from Gang Starr, voices 8-Ball in GTA III and Liberty City Stories. Guru died on 19 April 2010.
Asuka Kasen is the co-leader of the Yakuza in Liberty City and Kenji Kasen's sister in Grand Theft Auto III (2001). An old friend of Maria Latore, she helps Claude escape the Mafia, employs him on Staunton Island, and is killed by Catalina. Lianna Pai voices her.

Last Requests | Asuka helps Maria and Claude flee Portland for Staunton Island by boat |
Her missions | Sayonara Salvatore, Under Surveillance, Paparazzi Purge, Payday For Ray, Two-Faced Tanner, Bait, Espresso-2-Go! and S.A.M. |
Kenji's death | Claude kills Kenji for Donald Love, disguised as a Cartel attack; Asuka then takes over the Cartel's construction site and tortures Miguel |
Catalina kills Asuka and Miguel in revenge for the attacks on her SPANK operation. Claude finds the body at the Fort Staunton construction site in Ransom, right after S.A.M., and Catalina kidnaps Maria for $500,000. Asuka does not die in Grand Theft Aero, even though she appears in it. More on Catalina.
Asuka also appears in Grand Theft Auto Advance (2000). She is not a character in Liberty City Stories or San Andreas.
Donald Love is a media mogul, owner of Love Media, and a real estate developer who employs Claude on Staunton Island in Grand Theft Auto III (2001). At the end of his missions he disappears, and his fate is unknown. Kyle MacLachlan voices him in GTA III, and Will Janowitz in Liberty City Stories.

Donald Love disappears with the old Asian man and the package, and the game never says where. Rockstar itself wrote in 2009: "No one is quite sure what happened to Donald Love."
In Liberty City Stories (1998), Love runs for mayor with Salvatore Leone's backing and the help of Toni Cipriani, loses to Miles O'Donovan and is ruined. He has Fort Staunton destroyed with explosives from 8-Ball, and the game reveals he is a cannibal. He also appears in Vice City.
Joey Leone is the son of Mafia don Salvatore Leone and a mechanic with a garage in Trenton, Portland, in Grand Theft Auto III (2001). He gives Claude six missions for the Leone family. Michael Rapaport voices him.

Joey first meets Claude in Drive Misty For Me, a mission for Luigi: Claude drives Misty to Joey's garage, and Joey tells him to come back for work. He then gives Claude six missions:
| Mission | Pay | What you do |
|---|---|---|
Mike Lips Last Lunch | $10,000 | The Forellis owe Joey money. Steal Mike "Lips" Forelli's Idaho outside Marco's Bistro, have 8-Ball rig it with a bomb at his Harwood garage, bring it back undamaged and set it off |
Farewell 'Chunky' Lee Chong | $10,000 | Kill Lee Chong in Chinatown, Triad territory |
Van Heist | $20,000 | Ram an armored Securicar until the guards abandon it, then take it to the lock-up |
Cipriani's Chauffeur | $3,000 | Joey introduces Toni Cipriani. Drive Toni in the Mafia Sentinel to Chinatown, then to Momma's Restaurante. Unlocks the Uzi at Ammu-Nation |
Dead Skunk in the Trunk | $10,000, plus $5,000 per Forelli car destroyed | Take a Manana carrying a dead Forelli to the Harwood crusher while Forelli Sentinels chase you |
The Getaway | $10,000 to $30,000 | Drive the getaway car for a bank robbery; the pay depends on how many robbers you bring back alive |
Together, Joey's missions pay $63,000 to $83,000 before bonuses. Van Heist is the best fixed payout. The Dead Skunk bonus is paid as soon as each car is destroyed, so failing and retrying the mission adds it up.
Dead Skunk in the Trunk and The Getaway disappear if you have not done them before Last Requests, and both count toward 100% completion. Finish all of Joey's missions before that point.
The sign over the garage in Trenton reads Joey's Auto Painting; mission briefings call it Joey's Garage. A BF Injection, the car Joey is working on, sits there during all his missions.
Joey is last seen in Salvatore's Called a Meeting: Claude picks him up at his garage, then Luigi and Toni, and drives the three of them to Salvatore's while the Triads attack. He does not appear in person in any other game, including Liberty City Stories. His stepmother is Maria Latore; his father's story is on the Salvatore Leone profile.
Michael Rapaport, born on 20 March 1970 in New York, also voiced Troy Bradshaw in Saints Row (2006) and Saints Row 2 (2008). On television he appeared in Friends, Boston Public, The War at Home, Prison Break, My Name Is Earl and Justified.
Salvatore Leone, known as Sal or Uncle Sal, is the don of the Leone Mafia family in Liberty City and a secondary antagonist of Grand Theft Auto III (2001). He employs Claude, then tries to have him killed, and Claude kills him in Sayonara Salvatore. Frank Vincent voices him in GTA III, San Andreas and Liberty City Stories.

| Mission | What happens |
|---|---|
Salvatore's Called a Meeting | Toni Cipriani introduces Claude to Salvatore |
Chaperone, Cutting the Grass, Bomb Da Base: Act I | Salvatore gives Claude work, including destroying the Cartel's floating SPANK lab |

In San Andreas (1992), Salvatore owns a third of Caligula's Palace in Las Venturas and employs Carl Johnson, in missions such as Freefall and Saint Mark's Bistro. In Liberty City Stories (1998), he welcomes Toni Cipriani back, has the mayor Roger C. Hole killed, funds Donald Love's campaign, is arrested and freed, and kills Massimo Torini at the lighthouse. See the San Andreas and Liberty City Stories characters pages.
Salvatore is married to Maria Latore, and his son is Joey Leone. Frank Vincent, who voices him, died on 13 September 2017.
