GTA Vice City Story: Every Mission in Order and the Ending

GTA Vice City follows Tommy Vercetti, sent to Vice City in 1986 by mob boss Sonny Forelli to oversee a drug deal that is ambushed. Tommy tracks the ambush to drug lord Ricardo Diaz, kills him, takes over his mansion and builds a criminal empire by buying businesses across the city. In the finale, Lance Vance betrays him to Sonny, and Tommy kills them both to become the undisputed ruler of Vice City. Below, the story in four stages with every story mission in order, and what you must do to unlock the ending.
1. The Ambush: Vice City Beach
The game opens on Vice City Beach, the only island open at first, because a hurricane warning keeps the bridges closed. Tommy reports the ambush to Sonny, then works for Ken Rosenberg, Colonel Cortez and Avery Carrington while he looks for the people behind it. Guardian Angels opens Starfish Island, and Phnom Penh '86 ends the storm warning and opens the bridges, as explained on our Vice City map.

2. The Whole City: Bringing Down Diaz
With the city open, Tommy keeps working for Cortez, Avery and Diaz. Lance learns that Diaz organised the ambush and tries to kill him alone; Tommy rescues him in Death Row. Cortez leaves Vice City under pressure from the French, and Tommy and Lance storm Diaz's mansion on Starfish Island in Rub Out.

3. The Empire: Buying Vice City
Tommy moves into the mansion, now the Vercetti Estate, and follows Avery's advice to build an empire. From here, the story is driven by businesses, called assets, that you buy around the city. Each one unlocks its own missions and a daily income. You must complete at least six assets, including the Print Works, plus Cop Land for the Vercetti Estate, to unlock the finale; Phil's Place does not count.

4. The Finale: Keep Your Friends Close
Sonny sends collectors after Tommy's businesses, then flies to Vice City himself to collect what he thinks he is owed. Tommy plans to pay him in counterfeit money printed at the Print Works. At the mansion, Lance reveals he has sold Tommy out to the Forellis. In the shootout, Tommy kills Lance and Sonny, and ends the game discussing his future as the undisputed ruler of Vice City with Ken Rosenberg.
